What is Lacrifill®?

Lacrifill® is a soft hyaluronic acid-based gel that your doctor gently places into the tear drainage channels in your eyelids. This slows tear drainage, helping your eyes stay naturally hydrated, healthy, and comfortable for up to 6 months.1

How is Lacrifill® administered?

Lacrifill® is a quick, gentle, in-clinic treatment. It is administered in your doctor’s clinic, no surgery is required. You’ll be given an anaesthetic drop to keep you comfortable. Your doctor will administer Lacrifill® with an appropriately sized cannula, into the tear drain system puncta of both eyes.1,2
Lacrifill has been found to be easy to insert with no to minimal pain during the procedure.1

After Lacrifill® Treatment

Lacrifill® provides 6 months relief from a single treatment, helping to reduce symptoms of dryness.1

Your eyes may feel better immediately after treatment as the tear film may increase right away. For most patients this is achieved by seven days after treatment.3

Treatment can be repeated in 6 months as required.2

If you have any pain, redness, inflamed eyelids or any undesirable side effects, please contact your doctor immediately. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking any other ocular medications or if you are allergic to hyaluronic acid.

Your Tears And Tear Film

Your tears play an important role in keeping your eye healthy, by lubricating the surface of the eye.

The tear film is a thin, transparent layer of fluid that covers the front surface of the eye. Your tear film is an essential protective layer that helps keep the surface of the eye in a healthy condition. It has several function such as:4,5

  • Protection (flushes out debris)
  • Lubrication (protects the eye from drying)
  • Supplies oxygen and nutrients to the eye
  • Keep the surface smooth for light refraction to the eye

The tear film contain enzymes, lipids, metabolites and electrolytes and consists of 3 layers:4,5

  • Lipid layer (reduces tear evaporation, lubricates the eye, enhances vision)
  • Aqueous layer (hydrates and nourishes the cornea)
  • Mucin layer (stabilises the tear film)

Dry Eye Disease (DED)

Every time you blink, tears spread across your eyes to keep them healthy and comfortable. Sometimes your eyes don’t make enough tears, or the tears drain or evaporate too quickly because your tear film becomes unstable.

This can lead to symptoms of DED which can include the following:1

Scratchy feeling, stinging or burning, dryness, irritation, redness, inflammation, discomfort, blurry vision, sensitivity to light, sensation of something in our eye, difficulty wearing contact lenses, difficulty with night time driving or even watery eyes.

What Causes Dry Eye Disease (DED)

Dry Eye Disease can be caused by many factors including:4,6

  • Aging
  • Hormone changes such as menopause
  • Exposure to extreme environments such as reduced humidity, increased winds, air conditioning or heating
  • Contact Lens wearers
  • Certain medical conditions such as Sjögren’s Syndrome or autoimmune conditions
  • After cataract or refractive surgery
  • Using certain medications e.g antihistamines
  • Prolonged used of digital devices (long screen times)
